Flights cancelled and delayed as thousands converge on Barcelona airport

Around 20 flights have been cancelled in and out of Barcelona and many others have been delayed after thousands of protestors stormed El Prat airport on Monday.
Spontaneous protests erupted after Spain’s Supreme Court sentenced nine Catalan leaders and activists to prison terms of between nine and 13 years for sedition and misuse of public funds for their role in the failed 2017 independence bid.
Demonstrators poured onto the streets of Barcelona and headed to the airport, where they were met with a cordon of police and riot vans.
EasyJet and British Airways are among carriers that are being subject to delays. Meanwhile, some travellers risked missing their flights as they struggled to get to the airport on time.
Spanish Rail cancelled all trains to Barcelona airport by order of the Catalan police.
One Twitter user, Ben Wood, tweeted pictures of the protests, adding the technology event he was due to attend this week was moved from Hong Kong to Barcelona due to security issues.
