Tours cancelled as Cox and Kings India shuts down Kolkata office

Cox & Kings India has closed its office in Kolkata, cancelling tours and forcing customers to call in the police.

More than 20 customers filed criminal complaints with local police and late last week 2,000 employees were asked to resign with immediate effect according to an internal memo.

The company has been unable to pay their salaries for the past three months.

The memo said: “There is no guarantee how long it will take to clear the dues because the company is still looking for investors,”

The company posted a public notice outside the closed office announcing it was unable to operate multiple scheduled tours to Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia.

About a dozen tours were cancelled with the company having already collected customer payments of at least $1 million.

Many arrived at the airport to be informed their planned travel arrangements were cancelled.

Meanwhile a police case is ongoing against the company for failing to fulfil a commitment to provide advertised tours.

Police said they are looking into violations of the Indian Penal Code for criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
