Power failure hits the whole of Tenerife

Published on Monday, September 30, 2019

Authorities are investigating a power cut which left the whole of the island of Tenerife without electricity for nine hours yesterday.

Bars and restaurants were forced to close, tram services ground to a halt, traffic lights stopped, air-conditioning units packed up and dozens of people had to be rescued from elevators when power failed at the Granadilla substation.

Emergency generators kicked in at hospitals and airports and in some hotels until the power came back on.

The incident happened at just after 1pm on Sunday and affected 1 million people including holidaymakers.
